You Transform A Nut Into A Leader

If title, position or authority doesn’t make you a leader then what does? Short answer: the “first follower” transforms a “lone nut” into a leader. Dan Sivers 3-minute video helps you understand this point:http://www.youtube.com/embed/fW8amMCVAJQ?feature=oembed

Summary

  1. If you’re the lone nut, nurture your first few followers as equals.
  2. Make everything about the movement — not about you.
  3. Be public.
  4. Be easy to follow.

In Dan’s words:

The best way to make a movement, if you really care, is to courageously follow and show others how to follow. When you find a lone nut doing something great, have the guts to be the first person to stand up and join in.

To the control freaks, narcissists and egomaniacs — you might fancy yourself a leader but:

There is no movement without the first follower.

Who inspired this post today?

An hour ago, I was on the phone talking with, Maria Danaher. She’s authors the blog, Employment Law Matters (love the pun).

I was following up on a conversation that we had over coffee in Pittsburgh last Fall. During that visit, Maria shared a story about her husband, Tom Danaher and his psychedelic band, Autosalvage. Tom’s band was featured on NPR’s Fresh Air in August of 2012. In March of 2013, Autosalvage performed at SXSW — 45 years after releasing their first and only album.

In the context of this conversation about Tom, Maria brought up the “first follower” phenomena detailed above. Thanks, Maria.

By the way, Tom’s story is about grit, guts and movements. You’ll have to wait for Maria’s guest post for the rest.
